Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality: The Era of Immersive Computing Starts Now

The idea of constricting the whole word inside a tiny headset sounds fascinaing. Then again, blending digital components with real life situations promises enhanced experience. Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) can help achieve these two scenarios. Understanding technologies that can alter human perception can get confusing. It starts with differentiating the two. Augmented reality brings technology to users, while virtual reality can take them away from existing actuality.

Difference between VR & AR

  • Virtual Reality: This technology creates simulated environment using computer technology. It is capable of designing a completely new reality than the one that is already in front of the users. It could be animated or an actual place somewhere far across the world. It gives a 360° view of that place as if experiencing it in person for an immersive experience of reality technology .

Similarities between VR & AR

Both virtual and augmented reality leverage enriched user experience with the help of numerous technologies. Entertainment is the most common meeting point for the two, as they have transformed this industry over the last couple of years. As a result, technology manufacturers are enthusiastic about investing in VR and AR research & development. The field of medical science is expected to gain tremendous momentum with these technologies. Remote surgeries, information and anatomical modeling, and early detection are some futuristic AR and VR applications.

Neuroscience can witness phenomenal growth with the help of augmented and virtual reality. These technologies can be used for the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), associated anxieties, and as a behavioral therapy for many psychological disorders. Introduction to clever implementations and rich content has contributed to early adoption of AR and VR. After Nintendo’s viral Pokémon Go game, augmented reality is expected to take over hardware of the new age smartphones. Manufacturers are working on hardware-based augmented reality that can enable depth sensing cameras, language translators, and interior designing apps for enriched user experience. Prominent manufacturers have introduced smartphone applications for the users to access virtual reality apps. Most immersive VR apps work with Google Cardboard, Google Daydream, Samsung Gear VR, and other such headsets.

Apart from immersive gaming , virtual reality and augmented reality are set to transform education, entertainment, automotive, and healthcare industries. Integration of AR and VR with Internet of Things (IoT) and wearables is anticipated to reap greater goods for these industries. Applications of reality technology in entertainment can transform user experience in theme parks, television, and movie theaters. Augmented reality television sets designed through the existing 3D technology can make the TV content float in front of the users for an unobstructed view.

What Future Holds

As exciting as augmented reality is, infallibility is its primary roadblock. Companies are struggling with issues like limited applications, problems with field of vision, and inconvenience in day-to-day usage. Virtual reality on the other hand, offers simple and realistic user experience. However, it deals with its own set of issues including glitches with hardware, eye-tracking, display resolutions, and latency. Hence, the technology giants focus on fine-tuning the existing gadgets and apps for improved convenience, resilience, and performance.

As far as the future of reality technology is concerned, consumers are the ones fit to take a call. Augmented reality offers the additional information ranging from restaurants to classrooms to favorite holiday destinations. Conversely, virtual reality offers implicit, artificial reality built to take the users away from the actual world as and when they want. The fundamental choice lies in the hands of the consumer. Technology experts, however, need to make the VR more social and the AR more user-friendly for a bright future.
